It’s movie time! ‘French Postcards’ … a movie, not those kind of postcards

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “French Postcards” and, no … not those kind of postcards. “French Postcards” is a little-remembered coming-of-age film about a group of American students in Paris for year of study abroad.

A husband-wife team wrote the screenplay and he directed it and they’re better known as co-writers of “American Graffiti.” In any case, “French Postcards” is told in a series of postcards sent home by one of the characters about what’s happening in France. Some great; some good; some bad; and all quite the learning experience out of the classroom.

“French Postcards” has an ensemble cast of then-up and coming actors including Debra Winger and Blanche Baker. You get all the stereotypes in this one including the shy guy who comes out of his shell; the more worldly-wise guy who gets caught between a husband and wife having marital woes; and the outgoing, flirty girl who’s just having a good time. The thing is that “French Postcards” is done well and so well that it sidesteps the pitfalls of stereotypes and manages to steer a course through that minefield.

The best thing about “French Postcards” is that it stands the test of time. Since it is a comedy-drama, there’s no “action” sequence to make fun of today for not being CGI; and, since it is set in the late 1970s, it is a nice slice of life to watch for backgrounds.

“French Postcards” is a bunch of quiet fun and drama and is more than worth your time. I haven’t checked to see if it is streaming now or on movie networks. Make sure you see “French Postcards” … you’ll enjoy it … I guarantee it!
