Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Grandma’s Boy.” Boy, oh, boy! Here’s a raunchy comedy that is infused with weed … and I don’t mean from a gardening perspective.
“Grandma’s Boy” was originally set to go directly to video. It was from Adam Sandler’s production company, but then, I suppose, the studio executives watched it while smoking some themselves and decided to go the theater route first. Ah well, it failed at the box office, but became a big hit in rentals.
“Grandma’s Boy” is the story of a 30s-something guy who is a video game tester. His peers are in their late teens and early 20s and he winds up living with his grandmother and her two roommates. The plot revolves around a video game, but it doesn’t matter – it’s not about the plot; it’s about the weed.
Well, you’ll find weed, more weed, astoundingly sexual comments and actions from Shirley “The Partridge Family” Jones, weed, more weed and a wonderful comic turn by “Everybody Loves Raymond’s” mother, Doris Roberts, who “can feel” her hair growing while she’s high.
You also get in “Grandma’s Boy” a few nice little scenes involving excellent comic actors including David Spade as “Shiloh,” who is a server at a vegan restaurant; Jonah Hill as a video game tester who says, “gnarly;” and Rob Schneider as “Yuri,” who is the disgruntled property manager who kicks out the main character after his roommate spends all the rent money on hookers and that’s what creates “Grandma’s Boy.”
Whew! And I didn’t even get to the subplot about “Antiques Roadshow.”
Despite its crass and puerile humor (and weed), I don’t believe you’ll have a difficult time finding “Grandma’s Boy” and you’ll have a good laugh … I guarantee it!
