Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “The Late Shift,” which is the story behind the scenes of the David Letterman-Jay Leno affair as to which would succeed Johnny Carson.
Of course, even when the film came out, you knew the answer, but the book of the same name was great and the HBO movie “The Late Shift” is even better with Kathy Bates doing an Oscar-worthy performance but not getting any love for it during the awards season.
“The Late Shift” is about what happened when Carson got ready to leave and then left late night television. The story goes that Leno’s blustering, aggressive agent was behind the push to get Carson out and her guy into the late night seat on a permanent basis.
Actually, “The Late Shift” is in some ways more interesting today with there having been a second round of late night shifts with Conan O’Brien taking over for Leno and then Jay going back again after Conan crashed and burned.
Ah, well … you’ll watch “The Late Shift” for the actors’ efforts, especially Bates, who is nothing short of terrific as the agent who likes to mess with folks, put them down and then kick them when they’re down.
You’ll have to do a little research to find “The Late Shift,” but it is more than worth your time … I guarantee it!
