Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Draft Day.” Today (Thursday, April 25, 2024) is the first day of the latest NFL draft of college players. Well, if you like “fantasy football,” then watch “Draft Day” … it is totally fantasy since the focus team drafts for honor and integrity. It’s simple: the National Football League or any pro sports team today plays to win, not make a moral mark.
Actually, “Draft Day” is a decent film. It is a great showcase for Kevin Costner, who is a pro-team general manager on the biggest day of his professional life: NFL “Draft Day.” Costner is being pulled in every direction by professional and personal issues, but manages to navigate his way to a successful conclusion – although not drafting the “top pick” of the pundits in a fantasy movie where such a move would never happen in real life and it’s not going to happen today.
Costner plays the team’s general manager who had to fire his father; deal with his mother spreading his father’s ashes on the field; and a bunch of stuff including an owner who wants the public relations that getting the top QB would give the team.
You’ll find an impressive supporting cast in “Draft Day” (except for Chi McBride, who gives his usual sub-par performance … but it doesn’t manage to drag down the film) and there are just too many to mention individually in this micro-review.
So, for the start of the NFL’s annual draft today, watch “Draft Day.” The movie is much better than you’ll initially believe … I guarantee it!
