It’s movie time! ‘The Mechanic’ isn’t just a Bronson action flick … it offers true drama

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s check out the Charles Bronson classic where he plays a killer called “The Mechanic.” Here’s the story of a professional assassin who takes on a protégé and things don’t always play out as you would expect.

“The Mechanic” is Bronson as “Arthur Bishop” and he’s cold, calculating and deadly. In a lot of “action” films or even some other of Bronson’s work, you’d find shallow characters, little acting, over-the-top action and just a big mess on screen to try to snag in as many dollars as it could before disappearing.

However, with “The Mechanic,” you’d be totally wrong with that evaluation (or even memory if you remember the film).

“The Mechanic” is truly a deep drama with a variety of dramatic layers and has wonderful work from Bronson that should have netted him at least a Golden Globe nomination if not an Oscar nomination (which he never received in his career). From Bronson’s emerging bond with protégé “Steve McKenna” played by Jan-Michael Vincent to his pretended emotional relationship with a hooker, here is a wonderful piece of work by an actor you might not consider able to give it.

Director Michael Winner does a wonderful job, too, and took a big chance introducing the audience to Bronson with no dialogue in the first 15 minutes as “The Mechanic” completes an assignment by using a gas stove to destroy a man in an apartment.

All-in-all, there’s something else that puts “The Mechanic” as a cut above: You have to actually follow the plot and characters and think about it. You don’t always get that kind of film from the “action” or Charles Bronson genres.

Make sure you call up “The Mechanic” on your streaming service. You’re in for an interesting ride … I guarantee it!
