Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s turn the calendar back to 1978 for “The Big Fix” starring Richard Dreyfuss (the year he won an Oscar for the previous year’s effort in “The Goodbye Girl.”
“The Big Fix” mixes 1960s-1970s radicalism with a light noir turn in crime and criminals. It is very creative and some great work by F. Murray Abraham as a 1960s Abby Hoffman-type radical who has become an advertising executive. However, the split between crime comedy/drama and the post-radical time of the late 1970s detracts from the overall effort.
In “The Big Fix,” Dreyfuss is a bottom-feeding private detective who is hired to solve a mystery surrounding a political campaign. All of the current effects in the story are affected by the former radicalism that came out of college campuses in the 1960s.
Of course, “The Big Fix” has a big plot twist at the end, but it is Dreyfuss’ energetic effort and the solid work of a wonderful supporting cast that shines. Supporting cast members include Abraham, John Lithgow, Susan Ansbach and Bonnie Bedelia.
Dreyfuss plods through the mystery before the climax presents itself to him.
In real life, Dreyfuss broke his wrist before the production of the film began, so the cast was incorporated into the plot – Dreyfuss has a different story about how it happened as a way to ingratiate himself to whomever he’s speaking with at the time. Oh, yes, the truth comes out in the denouement!
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and you can easily find “The Big Fix,” but you’ll have to rent or purchase via one of several streaming services. So, find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “The Big Fix.”
