Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “The Departed,” if you are interested in a film of extreme violence and the degradation of human souls. “The Departed” brought director Martin Scorsese his first Oscar and it has a cast in the stratosphere with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson and Matt Damon.
Some movies are so difficult to watch once, that a complete second viewing (much less third or fourth) is nearly impossible. “The Deer Hunter” was one of those kind of films, but both “The Departed” and “L.A. Confidential” are of equal dramatic stature (well, close enough to “The Deer Hunter”) are watchable more than once. You might have to steel yourself, but they can be watched and admired more than once.
“The Departed” is the story (some say based on real-life mobster Whitey Bulger) of a crime boss and his poisonous reach into many lives in various ways. It’s a story told through two young police officers (DiCaprio and Damon) and the mobster (Nicholson). DiCaprio is infiltrating Nicholson’s crew while Damon becomes a rat inside the police for Nicholson.
In the end, just about everyone becomes “Departed” and you’ve watched one of Hollywood’s best-ever in American cinema. You’ll find it that powerful … I guarantee it.
