It’s movie time! ‘Bullitt’ with Steve McQueen is much more than a car-chase film

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Bullitt” starring Steve McQueen. Here’s another 1960s film noted for “action” (in this case, a legendary car chase scene) that is so much more and an example of how Hollywood once made interesting films with “action.”

With “Bullitt,” you get McQueen as a police lieutenant who is in charge of making sure an upcoming witness gets to testify against the mob. Well and of course, “Bullitt” is much more than that scenario. Toss in arguably the most-famous car chase scene in cinema history and you’ve got an “action” movie with depth and actors showing their A-level chops.

Director Peter Yates (click here to read my reviews of some of his films) knew how to build tension and develop characters with “Bullitt,” although co-star Robert Vaughn initially turned down the film because he thought it was vacuous. Vaughn died in 2016 and I’m sure he saw much more vacuous movies scroll across the screen in the 48 years he lived after the premiere of “Bullitt.”

In any case, you’ll find McQueen, Vaughn and Jacqueline Bissett along with a very competent supporting cast that includes Hollywood legend-to-be Robert Duvall, who plays a cab driver in a small role.

However, “Bullitt’s” legacy is that everyone “remembers” the car chase and it takes up nearly 11 minutes (10 minutes, 53 seconds) of the 114-minute film. BTW … McQueen’s instantly iconic Mustang was a GT model in Highland Green and sported a 390 cubic-inch engine, according to Internet sources. The Ford Motor Co. provided two of the cars to filmmakers. The last remaining “Bullitt” Mustang sold at auction in 2020 for $3.74 million. Click here to learn more about the Mustang …

Don’t worry if you’re not a fan of “car chase movies.” “Bullitt” is a true motion picture that you actually need to follow to understand the story. You will enjoy it again (or the first time) … I guarantee it.
