It’s movie time! ‘Assassins’ isn’t just your run-of-the-mill action flick

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Assassins” with Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas and Julianne Moore. Here’s a film that is interesting even though you might at first believe it would such a film.

In “Assassins,” Stallone and Banderas are hitmen challenging for jobs on the open market, but they’re different sides of the same coin: Stallone is the veteran who is looking to get away from the game and Banderas is the uber talented up-and-comer who is challenging Stallone’s perch on the top of the hitman’s pyramid.

You’ll find with “Assassins” that they’re after Moore, who plays a computer hacker that has been put into the crosshairs of needing to leave this Earth because of her hacking. Of course, she winds up with Stallone and he protects her as well as himself because, by this point, Banderas is looking to kill both.

A subplot exists about Stallone killing a mentor and the climax involves a resurrection of that killing.

All-in-all, you actually get an interesting storyline and not just some crap slapped together. The then-Wachowski brothers (Andy and Larry) who are now sisters (Lilly and Lana) and were the creative genius behind “The Matrix” franchise, wrote an early draft of “Assassins,” but hated what was done to the screenplay and sued unsuccessfully to have their names removed from it.

So, have a little action and a little drama along with violence with “Assassins.” You’ll like it … I guarantee it!
