Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let me advise you to watch “The Jackal” as only a movie of last resort. It’s “inspiration” is the assassination classic “The Day of the Jackal,” but there the link ends. “The Jackal” stinks … and stinks up any joint.
“The Jackal” is a pathetic “reboot” to cash in on the original since filmmakers have long given up on having creativity and have relied over the past 20 years or so on “rebooting” films that are classic or, more import, were successful at the box office.
In “The Jackal,” you actually get an interesting casting of the killer: Bruce Willis is OK in the title role, but it’s an “almost” effort. He’s “almost” good and he “almost” conveys his character well. Ah, well … here’s one that was retooled to fit modern society (the original was based in 1963) and is basically just noise from the killer to his motive to an IRA terrorist (Richard Gere with a horrible accent) to … ah, who cares? You shouldn’t.
The only bright spot in the film is Jack Black, who runs afoul of Willis. Still, it’s only a tiny role and you don’t get much out of him.
The only redeeming factor of “The Jackal” is that it is a film where you put it on as a film of last resort and can turn it off and ignore anything after you turned it off. After all, you don’t need to be a genius to figure out how it will end.
It’s easy it is to find “The Jackal,” but you might not want to … I guarantee it!
