It’s movie time! ‘Runaway Jury’ … an A-list cast with uneven performances

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Runaway Jury” with John Cusack, Rachel Weisz, Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman. You simply cannot go wrong with a cast that includes those actors … but it just isn’t as great a film as it should have been.

“Runaway Jury” offers the usual tremendous Hackman; a solid Cusack; a solid Weisz; but an energetic, but at the same time somewhat lifeless, Hoffman. Overall, though, the movie grades out pretty well and it would have been better if maybe Jeremy Previn was given the role that Hoffman plays.

In any case, “Runaway Jury” is the story of a jury up for sale … but why? A woman has sued a gun manufacturer after an office shooting that left her husband and others dead. Enter Cusack on the jury with Weisz working with him on the outside and they’re putting the jury verdict up for sale. Cusack is in charge of it from the beginning.

At the same time, Hackman is trying to figure out why it’s up for sale: Is the couple just greedy? Is the couple motivated by something? Hackman and his team of henchmen will work tirelessly to figure it out.

“Runaway Jury” is a decent adaptation of a best-selling novel, but not a perfect one (the author tackled the tobacco industry in the novel, but that business had knuckled under by the time the film was made and so the focus turned to the firearms industry). Still, it’s a nice why-they-doing-it? Instead of a who dunnit?

You won’t have any trouble finding “Runaway Jury” and you’ll like it … I guarantee it!
