Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch the late Raquel Welch in the vengeance-themed western “Hannie Caulder.” You might be inclined to believe this is just some fluff so filmmakers could parade Welch before their cameras. Not so. “Hannie Caulder” is a gritty drama of revenge in the Old West and nowhere near fluff.
Welch was at a peak of both her popularity and beauty in 1971 at the premiere of “Hannie Caulder,” but the film wasn’t another “One Million Years B.C.” with her running around as a cave woman in a bikini. It’s the story of vengeance, violence and an actual story worth telling. That’s not to say sex appeal wasn’t used in advertising, but it’s the quality of the movie that’s impressive.
Welch is the title character “Hannie Caulder” and at the start of the film three lowlifes kill her husband and rape her in a brutal scene of sexual assault that wasn’t often portrayed in movies 50+ years ago. She picks herself up, meets up with a bounty hunter and learns how to be a gunfighter from him.
Throughout the rest of the film, “Hannie Caulder” is hunting down the three creeps and she becomes very proficient with a gun, but she isn’t perfect and gets a little help from an expected corner at the end.
Welch is simply outstanding in the role of “Hannie Caulder” and also doing a solid job is the late Robert Culp as menacing gunfighter “Thomas Luther Price,” who teaches Welch how to shoot and, more importantly and in a subliminal way, how to kill.
I’ll let you find out more details and how “Hannie Caulder” winds up, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy this western … I guarantee it!
