Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “The Pentagon Wars” starring Kelsey Grammer and Cary Elwes. Here’s an early(ier) effort from HBO at the time of when the non-studio (read “network”) films started to make their mark.
In the early years when HBO started making films, long before Amazon, Netflix and others, their movies weren’t eligible to win an Oscar. Despite being as good and often times better than “studio” flicks and theater-only releases, these early films (take “Barbarians at the Gate,” “And the Band Played On” and “Recount”) were pathfinders to today’s streaming films.
OK … on to the movie …
With “The Pentagon Wars” you get the story of the development of the Bradley fighting vehicle. It is taken from a non-fiction book by the military officer who reviewed the building of the Bradley and found Pentagon stupidity (it started out as a no-frills troop carrier to be a mini-tank carrying many fewer soldiers than originally designed), waste, cost overruns and lies … many, many, many lies (mostly told to Congress).
“The Pentagon Wars” has Grammer as the affable, conniving general officer tasked with getting the Bradley into production and his efforts to conceal, hide and otherwise lie about … well, everything associated with it. Enter Elwes as the officer assigned to review the project.
The story of “The Pentagon Wars” then unfolds with the sleazy officers getting promotions and Elwes’ character getting turned out in to early retirement. There’s a wonderful supporting cast, too, headed by Viola Davis and John C. McGinley, and while there’s not much action, the acting is top-notch.
I didn’t do any search for “The Pentagon Wars” on streaming services, but I’m sure you can find it and you’ll enjoy it … I guarantee it!
