Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Sneakers” with Robert Redford. Here is a quietly outstanding espionage flick with a great headliner, a top-shelf supporting cast that does great work and a story that is wonderfully layered and executed. It also has a neat plot twist you might not see coming.
In “Sneakers,” Redford plays the owner of a low-rent security company. It does “sneaks” – that is, say a bank hires it to check on security both physical and electronic. He has a past as a student radical and has changed his name … but someone in the government knows his secret and he’s hired to steal what is the ultimate decoder machine.
The team with Redford in “Sneakers” includes the late Sidney Poitier as a former CIA agent with a cloudy past; Dan Aykroyd as a wacko conspiracy-theorist computer nerd; the late River Phoenix as a young ultimate computer nerd; and David Strathairn as a blind electronics expert. You even have the late James Earl Jones, who just died yesterday (Sept. 9, 2024), in a small role as an intelligence supervisor.
I’ll let you find out about the surprise character, played by Oscar winner Ben Kingsley, and you also get the wonderfully talented and two-time Oscar nominee Mary McDonnell as Redford’s former lover and now away from him (but coming back very slowly).
“Sneakers” isn’t as great as Redford’s espionage masterpiece “Three Days of the Condor,” but it is every bit as good as his work with Brad Pitt in “Spy Game.” Redford, who remains better remembered as the “Sundance Kid” or for the multiple-Oscar winning “The Sting,” knows his craft!
Throughout “Sneakers,” you will find excellent acting; the patter of a tight, well-done screenplay; and solid direction. All in all, “Sneakers” will sneak up on you and give you a positive jolt … I guarantee it!
