It’s movie time! On Friday the 13th … what else? ‘Friday the 13th’

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “Friday the 13th.” It’s Friday the 13th in September of 2024 and you should watch the horror classic “Friday the 13th” from 1980.

Unlike John Carpenter’s “Halloween” from two years before, “Friday the 13th” from Sean S. Cunningham isn’t anywhere near being a good movie. It has as its “headliner” and actor taking the job so she could buy a new car (they paid Betsy Palmer $1,000-per-week for 10 weeks work) and you get a post-“Animal House” Kevin Bacon in a doomed role as a camp counselor.

In any case, “Friday the 13th” has all the necessary stereotypes that a horror film needs: a hidden motivation for the killer; college students; good looking college students; college students; and mayhem.

Other than that, forget the plot. It doesn’t matter. “Friday the 13th” is a slasher film. You don’t need to know any more of a plot than that fact.

“Friday the 13th” is the first in the most-successful horror franchise in history (or it was at least in 2014 when I first published my review of the film. The monster in the franchise is “Jason,” but in the original … well, find out for yourself.

I know we’re coming up on Halloween next month, but since today is Friday the 13th, I thought I’d feature this classic. You’ll enjoy it … I guarantee it!
