It’s movie time! For a little ‘quirk’ … try the Coen brothers’ ‘Hail, Caesar!’

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “Hail, Caesar!” from the Coen brothers. Here’s a quirky flick that shrieks “Coen brothers” and simply a joy to watch … with a small disclaimer.

“Hail, Caesar!” is the story of a movie studio head (“Eddie Mannix” played by Josh Brolin – and there was a real Hollywood fixer named Eddie Mannix) who has to juggle more than a few things to keep his 1950s studio out of the press for a variety of unsavory actions by the entertainers in his employ.

You get a tremendous cast with “Hail, Caesar!” that’s headlined by George Clooney and you’ll also find Jonah Hill (in a tiny role), Scarlett Johanssen, Ralph Finnes and Tilda Swinton. You’ll also get a small yet quirky shot from Frances McDormand as a film editor who almost dies on the job.

OK … “Hail, Caesar!” ultimately drills down into the kidnapping of Clooney, who’s less kidnapped than just finding himself in an interesting situation. Johansson has a secret and Hill helps her keep it. Along the way, Brolin must navigate twins who are gossip writers (both played by Swinton); a photographer taking … uh, naughty photos of a starlet; and he is struggling to stay in Hollywood when a bigger job in corporate America comes calling.

Whew!

The only downside to “Hail, Caesar!” is that the Coen brothers allowed several scenes to drag (and one with Finnes) to be shot at all. Otherwise, you’ll get a hoot out of just about everything. The drag factor may put you off … but don’t leave in the middle! “Hail, Caesar!” is great … I guarantee it!
