Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “Cocktail” from 1988 with Tom Cruise, Elisabeth Shue and Bryan Brown. Here’s a film that collected a bunch of “worst” awards, but was still called very watchable.
It’s true. “Cocktail” isn’t a good film, but you’ll be very entertained while watching it.
In “Cocktail,” you get Tom Cruise just out of the military and looking for a job on Wall Street. His main credential? He reads the Wall Street Journal. Well, others have done worse with a better education. Ah, well.
Cruise is also taking college business classes and takes a job as a bartender to make some scratch. Well and of course, he hooks up with Brown as a bar owner/bartender who is looking to mentor someone and finds that Cruise can compliment him in the bottle acrobatics needed to entertain a Manhattan bar crowd at night. It’s not just pouring some liquor … it’s a juggling show in “Cocktail.”
Toss in some emotional stuff that causes a rift between Cruise and his mentor and then Tom finds himself in Jamaica as he tries to build up his working capital … he wants to open his own bar. He hooks up with Shue and reunites with his mentor … and it all leads to tragedy, drama and the requisite happy ending.
“Cocktail” is overall not a good flick, but there are solid parts and Shue is always worth watching … as is Cruise. You’ll get a kick out of “Cocktail” … I guarantee it!
