It’s movie time! ‘The Cannonball Run’ has a big cast and is just … fun

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “The Cannonball Run” with Burt Reynolds and a cast of … well, dozens! Here is one of the great examples of a “fun” film: You don’t have to think; you don’t have to worry about a plot; and you don’t have to worry that something tragic is going to happen to anyone.

“The Cannonball Run” takes its name from a real-life underground coast-to-coast race, but is the vehicle (pun intended) for a large cast of a few established stars such as Reynolds, some up-and-comers such as Jackie Chan and a bunch of older stars getting a late turn on the movie wheel such as Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.

The only plot to “The Cannonball Run” is the race and how the participants fare or don’t fare well. You’ll enjoy seeing Roger Moore spoof his own signature “James Bond” character as well as Farrah Fawcett and Dom Deluise along for the ride with Reynolds. Unfortunately, you also get tee-vee icon Jamie Farr in a most nasty stereotype of an Arab person that you could ever find in cinema history.

As for the race itself, the real one is called the “Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash” and several films have been framed around it from “The Cannonball Run” and its sequel with Reynolds (click here to read my review of the sequel) to a much, much better film called “The Gumball Rally.” Another was “Cannonball!” from 1976 with David Carradine, but it is a stinker.

So, buckle up and get ready to thumb your nose at the “double nickel” (remember when 55 mph was the speed limit on interstates?) with “The Cannonball Run.” You’ll have a tough time finding a better way to cruise through an hour-and-a-half of fun cinema time … I guarantee it!
