Boo! It’s that time of the year again as Halloween 2024 is on its way!
Before I start my annual recommendations of horror flicks to watch in the Halloween season and on Halloween itself, I’m starting off today with a pair of films that I’ve only seen once each because they are so disturbing that I never want to watch them again.
So, here they are and you can make your own choice if you haven’t seen them:
‘The Exorcist’ … Horror coefficient: A++
(1973; 122 minutes; rated R; directed by William Friedkin; starring Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow and Linda Blair)
“The Exorcist” is a total classic in the supernatural/horror genre and I frankly felt an evil presence in the theater when I saw it at its premiere in 1973 and I remain chilled to this day just hearing the name of the film. It has horrific, gruesome and supernatural scenes that made me decide to never see it again. It is just about as scary a horror flick as you could ever view.
“The Exorcist” won two Oscars and was nominated for eight others. It won for writing from another medium (taken from William Peter Blatty’s novel of the same name) and sound. Its nominations include all the major awards: best picture, best director, best actor, best actress and best supporting actress.
‘Thir13en Ghosts’ … Horror coefficient: A++
(2001; 91 minutes; rated R; directed by Steve Beck; starring Tony Shalhoub, Shannon Elizabeth and Embeth Davidtz)
“Thir13en Ghosts” has a powerful scare component of the presentation of the ghosts, but it has an even more powerful component of gruesome gore and violence that turned me so far off and scared the heck out of me that I said I wouldn’t watch this one ever again. The film is a remake of a 1960 horror flick and is the story of family members who inherit a strange mansion and find ghosts imprisoned inside. Damn! This is one gruesome film to watch (especially the cow!).
It’s making its rounds this Halloween season on AMC, but this version is heavily edited and I’m no fan of films edited for content.
***
I usually don’t find many films that I don’t want to see a second, third or more times.
Wonderfully acted violent dramas such as “L.A. Confidential” are worth watching several times to see things you didn’t see before. However, I have found several that I simply cannot watch ever again – such as “The Deer Hunter” as a story about the Vietnam war and its etching on the psyche of the U.S. (maybe since I saw it at its premiere in 1978 and that it was too soon after the war ended in 1975).
Well, beginning tomorrow you’ll find my recommendations for horror films this Halloween season. I’ve grouped them in genres … so come back if you dare!
