Boo! It’s that time of the year again as Halloween 2024 is only a few days away!
For my annual recommendations of horror films, I’m separating the recommendations into genres … and today we’re looking at: Aliens!
Here in alphabetical order are my recommendations for horror flicks with aliens (obviously, click the link in the movie title to read my review):
‘Aliens’ … Horror coefficient: A++
(1986; 137 minutes; rated R; directed by James Cameron and starring Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn and Carrie Henn)
You’ll find everything about horror and aliens in this one … and you get Sigourney Weaver getting it in gear and kicking serious aliens ass! This is a sequel and one of the very few in which the sequel is better than the original, which itself is a classic that is overtaken by the sequel. Weaver goes back to the planet where she first encountered the killer aliens and … well, you find out!
‘The Blob’ … Horror coefficient: B+
(1958; 86 minutes; rated ‘Approved;’ directed by Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr. and Russell S. Doughten Jr. and starring Steve McQueen, Aneta Corsaut and Earl Rowe)
Here is the quintessential horror flick from the 1950s. It has Steve McQueen in his first “big” movie and it has a blob from outer space that’s … well, taking over everything. You don’t have to do much thinking with this one, so sit back and enjoy it.
‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ … Horror coefficient: A+
(1956; 80 minutes; rated Approved; directed by Don Siegel and starring Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter and Larry Gates)
This one is another great from the 1950s, but it is more of a cult favorite and was “rebooted” in the 1970s with Donald Sutherland. However, the original is better and it ratchets up the tension nicely … and has a better ending than the “reboot.”
‘Night of the Comet’ … Horror coefficient: C+
(1984; 95 minutes; rated PG-13; directed by Thom Eberhardt and starring Catherine Mary Stewart, Kelli Maroney and Robert Beltran)
Here’s another that was bigger on the cult circuit than it was in theaters and it has an interesting premise: A comet passes close to earth, but only a few survive. Of course, this causes conflict (an especially neat scene is in a mall with a submachine gun battle) and a predictable ending.
‘They Live’ … Horror coefficient: B+
(1988; 93 minutes; rated R; directed by John Carpenter and starring Roddy Piper, Keith David and Meg Foster)
Legendary horror director John “Halloween” Carpenter directed this aliens-take-over-the-world effort and it stars pro-wrestler “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. He becomes one of the few in the world who can literally see the aliens in their awful true form, who are masked from most humans through mind control. I’d say this one is more action than real horror, but it’s a John Carpenter film, so I like it!
Come back tomorrow for my next recommendations … this time from the genre of the supernatural.
