Halloween 2024: The supernatural … the Omens, Christine, a strangler and a little Phantasm!

Boo! It’s that time of the year again as Halloween 2024 is only a few days away!

For my annual recommendations of horror films, I’m separating the recommendations into genres … and today we’re looking at: The supernatural!

Here in alphabetical order are my recommendations for horror flicks with a supernatural theme (obviously, click the link in the movie title to read my review):

‘Christine’ … Horror coefficient: B+
(1983; 110 minutes; rated R; directed by John Carpenter and starring Keith Gordon, John Stockwell, Alexandra Paul and Harry Dean Stanton)

Legendary horror film director John Carpenter did an OK job with Stephen King’s story about an evil spirit within a car that takes over a teenager’s soul. “Christine” is the name of the car and it causes all sorts of problems for everyone. I’m not sure it could have been better, but it is just an OK film with an interesting, but not A-list cast.

‘The Night Strangler’ … Horror coefficient: B-
(1973; 74 minutes; rated NR; directed by Dan Curtis and starring Darren McGavin, Simon Oakland and Jo Ann Pflug)

Here is the sequel to one of the best-ever vampire movies from TV and it stars Darren McGavin as a reporter who turns up stories involving the supernatural. In this one, there is a series of strangulation cases and he traces it to a person believed to be more than 100 years old and comes out of hiding in Seattle every 30 years or so and strangles women. You get nice turn from Wally Cox in a supporting role.

‘The Omen’ … Horror coefficient: A++
(1976; 111 minutes; rated R; directed by Richard Donner and starring Gregory Peck, Lee Remick and David Warner)
‘Damien: Omen II’ … Horror coefficient: A
(1978; 107 minutes; rated R; directed by Don Taylor and starring William Holden, Lee Grant and Jonathan Scott-Taylor)
‘The Final Conflict’ … Horror cofefficient: B-
(1981; 108 minutes; rated R; directed by Graham Baker and starring Sam Neill, Rossano Brazzi and Don Gordon)

“The Omens” as I call the trilogy is an interesting series of films. The original is a classic in the horror genre with Gregory Peck finding out that his son is the anti-Christ. Well, everyone knows the AC grows up and he finds his way through two more films and they decline in story- and production-quality. Still, the first two are worth your time … the final chapter, not so much.

‘Phantasm’ … Horror coefficient: B
(1979; 89 minutes; rated R; directed by Don Coscarelli and starring A. Michael Baldwin, Bill Thornbury, Reggie Bannister and Angus Scrimm)

“Phantasm” is a great walk down memory lane from the late 1970s explosion of horror flicks. It’s not a good movie, but became a cult favorite with the flying sphere that drills into people’s heads among other gory things (such as a severed finger that turns into a flying insect menace). You can’t go wrong with this one.

Come back tomorrow for my next recommendations … this time from the genre of the werewolf.
