Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time before today’s election returns begin rolling in, watch a political film and I suggest either or both “Dave” or “Recount.” “Dave” is a comedy-drama about a presidential double who becomes president, while “Recount” is the story of the controversy of the 2000 U.S. Presidential election.
Today is Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024, and it is general election day here in the United States. Key on everyone’s ballot is the race for the U.S. presidency. So, use today as an excuse to see excellent acting in a couple of films from the political arena of cinema.
“Dave” is the story of a everyday guy who becomes president because he is a double for the nation’s leader. Kevin Kline plays both roles, but you’ll come to embrace the “good” president over the previous cold-hearted “bad” president. The move is very deftly handled; the comedy is sublime and excellent; and you’ll feel much better about the potential for politics after seeing “Dave.”
As for “Recount,” it is the story of the 2000 election controversy that became the debatable start of incredibly divisive politics in the U.S. In my review, I look at the actors and their work … NOT the story or either political side; or who was “right” or who was “wrong;” or accuracy of details – it isn’t, after all, a documentary film. “Recount” has an excellent, large cast and just about each one does a great job – especially Laura Dern as the controversial Republican character of Katherine Harris and she won a Golden Globe for her effort.
You simply cannot go wrong watching either “Dave” or “Recount” today, although if you’re torn, I’d take “Dave.” Still, find one or the other and you’ll be entertained … I guarantee it!
