Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “Operation Petticoat” with Cary Grant and Tony Curtis. Here’s a “fun” film mostly set in World War II and while it has a comedy element, it isn’t just fun-and-games in the military … it is somewhat of a “war” film.
“Operation Petticoat” is the story of a WWII submarine commanded by Grant. He gets stuck with Curtis as what appears at first to be an unqualified officer, but soon shows his mettle as a scrounger extraordinaire! At one point, Curtis and his team of … uh, scroungers … goes ashore and finds: “Women!” Grant exclaims. “Wow! That’s what I call scavenging,” says another officer.
The women are a group of nurses who were stranded on an island after a Japanese attack destroyed their transport aircraft. Curtis gives them a lift and the submarine, which has had a most unusual career up to that point, goes even more haywire in “Operation Petticoat.” Grant even manages to torpedo … a truck! And that scene was taken from an actual WWII incident in which a U.S. sub’s torpedo went astray, hit a dock and a truck on the dock was destroyed.
The ultimate embarrassment was for the sub needing to be painted and the crew had to mix red and white paint (all that was available) and, so the sub becomes pink!
Ah well, it’s an interesting film and Curtis’ daughter, the iconic Jamie Lee Curtis, would be part of a rather regrettable TV show of the same name a generation later from “Operation Petticoat” from 1959.
So, find “Operation Petticoat” and spend an enjoyable two hours and four minutes. You’ll have fun just about every minute … I guarantee it!
