Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch either of two Clint Eastwood flicks where he stars as bare-knuckles fighter “Philo Beddoe:” “Every Which Way But Loose” or “Any Which Way You Can.” Here are two of Clint’s most popular box-office hits from 1978 and 1980, yet, they’re a bit cheesy and suffer from him having an orangutang as a sidekick.
“Every Which …” is the original and is the worst of the two … and both are pretty bad since they suffer from poor production values; each with it’s own terrible screenplay; and both suffering from awful direction. Yet, each has bright spots with the sequel having a few more.
The story of “Every Which …” and “Any Which …” is defined by Eastwood as “Philo Beddoe.” In the first, he falls for a woman who’s just taking him for his money and he has some to spend because of his bare-knuckles fights in which he has his best friend on him. “Every Which …” spins out as Clint tries to find the woman, while in “Any Which …” he gets tangled up with mobsters who want to set up a fight with their guy and Clint resists (while being back with the woman who wronged him in the original).
One bright spot in both is the bumbling motorcycle gang that haunts Eastwood in both films. Their leader, “Chollo,” is the longsuffering leader of a bunch of morons, but they do turn to help Clint in the sequel.
Sigh. It’s all pretty bad (especially when Eastwood slaps a foe with a fish and then yells like “Tarzan”).
In any case, these two films were tops at the box office for Clint and actually stand up by not looking too dated these some 45+ years later.
Although “Every Which Way But Loose” and “Any Which Way You Can” are bad cinema from an amazing actor and director (but he didn’t direct either one of these two stinkers), you’ll probably enjoy them … I guarantee it!
