Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “Tony Rome” with Frank Sinatra in one of his 1960s efforts. “Tony Rome” is a nice slice-out-of-time to watch and Frank’s pretty much always watchable.
I’ve always enjoyed Sinatra’s “caper” and private-eye thrillers from the original “Ocean’s 11” to “Assault on a Queen” (a story about robbing the ocean liner Queen Mary) to the police procedural “The First Deadly Sin.” Sinatra does a good job and you get your metaphorical money’s worth!
“Tony Rome” is about a private investigator in Miami (Sinatra) who gets mixed up in a family’s affairs and is kinda forced into exposing the heart of mysteries surrounding the family. It shows a tough guy’s-guy and is culturally set in its day with men in charge, sexism and no political correctness to be found anywhere.
With “Tony Rome,” you get a nice cast from a young(ish) Gena Rowlands to Jill St. John to Simon Oakland and to some Sinatra favorites with Richad Conte and boxing legend Rocky Graziano, who was in several Sinatra films.
Of course, Sinatra winds up the case and helps those out who need helping and comes out on top. But, then again, you didn’t need me to tell you that, did you? 😊 The film has a sequel called “Lady in Cement” with Raquel Welch.
You can easily find “Tony Rome” and you’ll have fun if for nothing else than seeing Miami Beach in the 1960s … I guarantee it!
