It’s movie time! ‘The Guns of Navarone’ worth watching not as war film, but for its acting

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “The Guns of Navarone.” Here’s a classic film from 1961 that is set in World War II, but you probably don’t realize why it was made or why you should watch it beyond being a WWII flick.

“The Guns of Navarone” is a simple story: A group of commandos has been chosen to knock out a couple of big artillery guns that will prevent the evacuation of British troops from an island in the Greek archipelago.

Yet, it is more of a story of each person’s individual desires and motivations that make this more than just another film set in WWII.

In “The Guns of Navarone,” Gregory Peck does a perfect job in conveying his character’s audacity, intelligence and cruel professionalism when he has to take over from the group’s commander, who is injured during the mission. His cold-blooded professionalism is an Oscar-worthy performance, but he didn’t get a nomination (the film had a win in special effects and six other nominations including director and best picture).

In fact, “The Guns of Navarone” was supposed to be an “anti-war” film, but you really will find it difficult to believe through the story and how the whole thing plays out to the end. “The Guns of Navarone” doesn’t glorify war and does show a cruel side of what soldiers have to do at times, but it isn’t an obvious, straight-out statement against war that I could see.

“The Guns of Navarone” is a simply terrific motion picture and I believe it is the best of any WWII film every produced. So, find it immediately and you’ll be astounded by the work of the actors and director … I guarantee it!
