It’s movie time! ‘Big Trouble’ is one of the 5 best comedies in the past 50 years

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch “Big Trouble” with Tim Allen, Rene Russo, Stanley Tucci and Zooey Deschanel. Here’s is probably the best comedy you’ve never seen. It was taken from a Dave Barry novel of the same name, but the film is actually much funnier than the novel.

“Big Trouble” is a crime-comedy that has everything from a nuclear bomb to a couple of bumbling criminals to a couple of bumbling hitmen to a dog whose owner (Tucci) has been sprayed with a toad’s hallucinogenic and imagines it having Martha Stewart’s hand and is barking his name! Also, you get a couple of cops: one bumbling, but the other in a wonderfully delightful turn by Janeane Garofolo.

Virtually everything in “Big Trouble” is funny, from the longsuffering hitmen that get a subplot going with my beloved University of Florida Gators football team to the headliners of Russo and Allen. Dennis Farina is one of the hitmen who is hired to kill Tucci’s character. Even a notch funnier is the droll, sarcastic humor of teenager Deschanel as she verbally zings everyone from Allen’s son to the criminals.

In “Big Trouble,” there are so many great lines and subplots (just take the bar “The Jolly Jackal,” where “they have more AK-47s than Budweiser”) that I don’t want to spoil too much for you, but I also want to entice you to watch “Big Trouble” as soon as you can.

Sadly, “Big Trouble” was originally set for release in September 2001, but the 9/11 terrorist attacks pushed back the premiere nearly a year and the advertising budget was cut. However, this is simply one the five best film comedies of the past 50 years and is my favorite review of the 404 that I’ve written … I guarantee it!
