Hooray for Hollyweird! Let’s try ‘Romancing the Stone’ and ‘The Jewel of the Nile’

It’s a new year of 2025, so I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation I have a pair: “Romancing the Stone” and “The Jewel of the Nile.”

Both films star Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner and both, as I note in my reviews, are rollicking films that is just grand entertainment through an action film. Danny DeVito provides the comic relief as the profane misfit who is mixed up in the couple’s life and treats everyone within earshot to his denunciations of everything in his life.

“Romancing the Stone” is the original from 1984 and introduces Turner as an author who finds herself on an adventure to South America with a treasure map to rescue her sister, who has been kidnapped. She meets and falls in love with Douglas, an American ex-pat who smuggles parrots and the joins up for the whole adventure. DeVito is part of the bad guys’ entourage and follows them everywhere.

In the sequel, which arrived 18 months after the original, you find the couple having a bit of problems with their relationship in “Jewel of the Nile.” So, she sets off as an author to interview a coming dictator in the region of north Africa and he has stolen the “jewel of the Nile.” Of course, Douglas is hot on her trail and the two are back in the adventure business again.

As I note in my review … the “stone” is a jewel, but the “jewel” isn’t a stone!

Make sure you enjoy both these films because you won’t find many like them any longer in today’s superficial cinema of CGI special effects with superheroes and anti-heroes and whatever-heroes. “Romancing the Stone” and “The Jewel of the Nile” should be right up your alley so you can say, “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
