Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘O.C. and Stiggs’ just about worst-ever film in past 8 decades

Hi again in this new year of 2025. I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation I have an example of what could be the worst-ever film from Hollyweird in the past 75 years: “O.C. and Stiggs” from legendary director Robert Altman.

Here is a film that has its comedy roots with National Lampoon (the characters were a staple there 40+ years ago) and with a seven-time Oscar nominated director in Altman (“MASH,” “Nashville,” “Gosford Park”), you wouldn’t be able to conceive just how bad a film could be produced. I’ll tell you how bad: It made only $28,815 in “premieres” in two different years – and no, I didn’t forget any zeroes in that number.

“O.C. and Stiggs” is the story about a couple of rebellious teenagers who make life miserable for an insurance company executive and his family. Throw in Dennis Hopper in a character literally modeled after his role in “Apocalypse Now,” plus “Gilligan’s Island’s” Tina Louise as an over-sexed school nurse and you’ll be looking for a barf bag sooner rather than later.

I don’t have enough words to describe just how bad “O.C. and Stiggs” comes off: the production stinks; you cannot find any evidence of any “acting” by “actors” (a young-ish Jon Cryer and Cynthia Nixon just embarrass themselves in a way no filmmaker could ever plan); and, as I’ve noted, the director should have been fired on the first day (it’s happened before in Hollyweird).

So, go ahead and find “O.C. and Stiggs” to see one of the top five worst-ever films. And, you can always say, “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
