Hooray for Hollyweird! Jackie Chan’s first U.S. film was ‘Battle Creek Brawl’

For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s go with Jackie Chan in “Battle Creek Brawl,” which was also released at “The Big Brawl” (I guess the idiots in marketing didn’t like the original title for its re-release).

“Battle Creek Brawl” was Chan’s first U.S. film and the first in which his voice is used (his previous efforts in Asia had his voice dubbed in Cantonese or Mandarin) and it’s the story of an Asian-American young man who fights gangsters; and then is blackmailed into working for them by being their representative in a winner-take-all fightfest in Battle Creek (Texas, that is, not the more recognized breakfast cereal town in Michigan).

You won’t find “Battle Creek Brawl” to be much of a film, but it is watchable and, if you can stand the martial arts violence, a bit of a hoot. It has a somewhat interesting cast with Oscar winner (certainly not for this one) Jose Ferrer, Mako and the little-remembered Kristine De Bell. You also get the actor who was “Don Corleone’s” hitman “Luca Brasi,” but he doesn’t do a very good job in “Battle Creek Brawl.”

Oh, you also get a couple of supporting actors with interesting names: Jeep Swenson and Ox Baker, but they don’t play much of a role in the film.

You’ll be able to find “Battle Creek Brawl” on a streaming service and you can always say, “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
