Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘Time After Time’ is an excellent film with time travel

For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s check out the wonderful “Time After Time” in which H.G. Wells chases “Jack the Ripper” into modern-day San Francisco (well, 1979’s San Francisco, which was much different than today’s San Francisco).

“Time After Time” has an excellent screenplay and its story is layered and intricate and quite poignant in the film’s best scene when the protagonist and antagonist debate modern society. “Jack the Ripper” shows Wells a TV news clip of violence, warfare and brutal sports. Wells tells him they “don’t belong” in the modern world, while “The Ripper” says, “… I belong here completely and utterly. I’m home. Ninety years ago I was a freak. Today, I’m an amateur.”

So, so sad.

With “Time After Time,” you get Malcolm McDowell as H.G. Wells and co-stars David Warner as “Dr. Leslie ‘Jack the Ripper’ Stevenson” and Mary Steenburgen as the modern-day woman that is at the center of their strange axis.

Nicholas Meyer’s direction of “Time After Time” is flawless and the movie does an excellent job of dealing with time travel (Wells’ glasses are broken and at a museum exhibit of his life is his desk … complete with a set of glasses in a drawer … what a nice touch!).

All in all, you simply cannot go wrong with this film. Also, despite its story involving “Jack the Ripper,” the violence is at a minimum by today’s standard … so find “Time After Time” on a streaming service and you can always say, “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
