For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s check out “Scream” from the late, great mastermind of horror: Wes Craven.
I don’t usually recommend horror movies outside of the Halloween season, but I was reminded of how good “Scream” is a motion picture filmed using 50 gallons of fake blood. “Scream” has it all: the killer is a slasher; the killer’s identity remains a secret for some time; you don’t get the full backstory to the end; and Craven knew how to revive the horror genre with this one.
“Scream” came out in 1996 at a time when horror films had become devoid of creativity and was just relying on increasingly gruesome acts to “scare” the audiences. Sigh. What a wasteland with such rich roots in Hollyweird.
So, Craven comes back with “Scream” with a great young(er) cast along with a couple of veterans; injects real scares back into a horror film – and not just “grab the air sickness bag” type stuff; and do make it bloody, but in a respectable fashion.
“Scream” has the usual storyline: a killer is plowing his or her way through a community and has become trademarked by a “Ghostface” mask. It’s the anniversary of the murder of the mother of the film’s main character “Sidney Prescott” played by the wonderful actor Neve Campbell. She’s still traumatized, but it’s gonna get worse as “Ghostface” starts chalking up the nasty kills.
Of course, the town ultimately puts out a curfew and the “kids” toss a party that becomes the climax of “Scream” and explainer of all the backstory that you need. The cast includes Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Drew Barrymore and, in an uncredited role as the high school principal: the one-and-only Henry Winkler!
You won’t have any trouble finding “Scream” in today’s streaming world and I also have it on DVD as well as Blu-Ray. So, find it … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
