For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s go back to 1985 and enjoy Chevy Chase in what is most likely his most iconic role and title of the movie: “Fletch.”
Sure, he was in “Caddyshack,” but “Fletch” is his defining film and, in my opinion, his best comedic effort. He would go on to an uneven film career, with highs such as the “Vacation” franchise and his most memorable character “Clark Griswold” as well as basement-type lows with the sequels to “Caddyshack” and “Fletch” and a really horrid effort in “Dirty Work” with Norm Macdonald.
In “Fletch,” Chase pinballs from one scene to another affecting one personality after another … he even dreams himself a pro basketball player. The best thing is that you can watch these scenes over and over and never tire of them or fail to laugh (remember the “Moon River” moment?).
“Fletch” isn’t big in the way of a supporting cast, but those who are there, including tee-vee’s George Wendt as a drug dealer on the beach, manage to prop up all of Chase’s foolishness and quips (remember the lobster lunch at the tennis club?) in an efficient manner.
The film “Fletch” was taken from a serious novel about crime and journalism that was one of my favorites in the 1970s (it was published in 1974), but Chase and director Michael Ritchie did a sensational job in turning it into more of a comedy than the dramatic scenes that it offers.
I usually hate the “treatments” of novels that I enjoy because Hollywood and even solid independent filmmakers have trouble translating all those words onto the big screen. However, “Fletch,” which should have upset me with the comedy angle, is just perfect in its translation.
It’s a streaming world, you’ll easily find “Fletch” … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
