For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s go with Eddie Murphy’s “Harlem Nights” and its wonderful cast that includes Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx and Della Reese!
I read that Murphy, who is credited as the writer and director as well as being the co-star, thought more about partying than he did about directing the film, but it doesn’t show. “Harlem Nights” has exceptional chemistry between all the characters and you couldn’t have chosen a better cast for this movie.
“Harlem Nights” is the story of a after-hours club owner (Pryor as “Sugar Ray”) and a boy (Murphy as “Quick”), who he takes under his wing in the first scene and then the rest of the film is when he’s an adult. The two run the best after-hours club in Harlem, but a gangster is plotting a takeover, so Pryor begins plotting a strategy to rip-off the gangster while making a smooth exit to avoid (much) trouble – except for a few killings and a couple of bombings.
Foxx and Reese should have had their own sitcom after this film because they bicker with the best of them. He’s Pryor’s man at the dice table (even though he’s pretty much blind and ticks off the players reading the dice wrong) and she’s the madam running the bordello attached to the club.
The rest of the cast of “Harlem Nights” from feme fatale Jasmine Guy to Michael Lerner as the gangster and Danny Aiello as his vicious, cruel policeman-on-the-take leave a solid mark with their work in this one!
It’s a streaming world, so you won’t have any trouble finding “Harlem Nights” … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
