For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s go with “The Spy Who Dumped Me” with Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon.
OK, last time out I suggested “Spy” with Melissa McCarthy and here’s another “spy” film, but this time it has a play on the title of a film in a well-known franchise, but with a little more comedy than Melissa’s effort. “The Spy Who Dumped Me” has its flaws (read my full review for them all), but in the end is funny; it has decent dramatic moments; and it’s CGI action is really nice. All in all, maybe not an Oscar winner, but it sure is watchable.
In “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” Kunis’ boyfriend is “missing” in her eyes, but is on a secret mission in Europe (she doesn’t know he’s a spy). Well, she and McKinnon, whose her best friend, head to Europe and get tangled up in the web of espionage. The film also has a nice villain: A young ice queen who’s a former Soviet-style gymnast-turned-supermodel-turned-assassin.
Wow! Talk about a character!
The best reason to watch “The Spy Who Dumped Me” is McKinnon. I’ve never been impressed with anything live-action by Kunis (she’s voiced the hilarious “Family Guy” animated series for 300+ episodes) and she’s OK here, but McKinnon is wonderfully over-the-top and is the biggest reason you might need to watch it.
You won’t have any trouble finding “The Spy Who Dumped Me” … it’s a streaming world … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
