Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘The Presidio’ is an impressive murder-mystery

A publicity “still” photograph from the movie.

For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s watch “The Presidio,” which is an excellent murder-mystery that begins at a military base and winds all through San Francisco.

“The Presidio” has an impressive cast headlined by Sean Connery, Mark Harmon and Meg Ryan. The even more impressive part of “The Presidio” is how director Peter Hyams managed to make the emotional part of the film blend so well with the action and details of the rest. Harmon and Ryan sizzle on the screen together and their romance integrates nicely with the plot.

You have Connery as the tough, no-nonsense officer of the military police who was the driving force in Harmon leaving the Army and now Harmon is a homicide detective and in charge of the murder case that began at Connery’s base (The Presidio) and ended up in a fiery crash on the streets of San Francisco (Harmon’s turf).

Twists and turns confront and initially confound Connery and Harmon, whose relationship doesn’t get any better once Harmon begins dating Ryan, who is Connery’s daughter in the movie.

Coming in a little sideways from the supporting cast of “The Presidio” is a really strong turn by Jack Warden, who plays sergeant to Connery’s lieutenant colonel, but is the sounding board and reasonable voice as Sean gets upset by Ryan dating Harmon. However, all is not as it appears with Warden.

Along the way in “The Presidio,” Connery gets into a neat little fight at a bar where he only uses his thumb (his left thumb, by the way) the settle the hash of a loudmouth who taunts the officer in uniform.

So, there you have it. “The Presidio” … it’s a streaming world … find it and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
