For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s go with a comedy-drama set at the beginning of World War II with “Father Goose” starring Cary Grant and Leslie Caron.
I know that war should never mix well with comedy (although Clint Eastwood’s “Kelly’s Heroes” is an exception) and I never would like anyone to believe I’m mocking the sacrifice soldiers have made for the U.S. in our many wars and conflicts, but “Father Goose” does a good job with both the comedy and the drama.
Grant, an ex-pat American in the Pacific as war breaks out with Japan, is blackmailed into becoming a “Coastwatcher,” which was men who hid out on islands and radioed reports of the enemy’s aircraft and warship actions. Grant wants nothing to do with it, but he is forced into the game and becomes code name “Father Goose.”
He is ordered to rescue another Coastwatcher from a nearby island, but finds the man has been killed by the Japanese, but winds up with the custody of Caron, who plays a teacher and monitor to a group of schoolgirls – all children of diplomats. It is his relationship with Caron and the girls where the comedy evolves with “Father Goose” … but also does drama with a nice scene of protecting the children when the Japanese land on his island.
“Father Goose” is an excellent film with a cast of basically four (Grant, Caron and two British officers), if you don’t count the children. So, find it! It’s a streaming world … find “Father Goose” and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
