Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘Down Periscope’ is solid comedy to watch any time

We’ve begun summer of 2025 in earnest and I’m continuing the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s stay on a comedy tack with “Down Periscope” (no pun intended).

With “Down Periscope,” you get a comedy set in the U.S. Navy with Kelsey Grammer as a controversial skipper-to-be of a submarine, but gets a different kind of command for a different kind of mission. “Down Periscope” is filled with the usual comedy stereotypes, but Grammer and the cast manage to inject a lot of verve into their characters and elevate this one above many.

“Down Periscope” has Grammer getting command of a formerly de-commissioned diesel-powered sub. He’s not in favor with the majority of the brass because of his somewhat unconventional professional and personal styles. So, he finds himself on a junk boat with, of course, an odd crew that chart their own course (this time, pun intended).

In the crew,  you’ll get known commodities such as Bruce Dern, Rip Torn, William H. Macy, Harry Dean Stanton, Rob Schneider and Lauren Holly to go along with lesser-remembered actors (but just as funny) including Harland Williams, Toby Huss and Bradford Tatum, among the rest of the crew.

“Down Periscope” just goes along its rollicking way after a somewhat slow start where Grammer is hitting golf balls off the deck the submarine skippered by Macy. After he gets his transfer, then things pick up.

Unlike many comedies set in the Navy, just about the entire comedy plays out aboard the submarine. There’s no funny business ashore for “Down Periscope,” especially knowing what happened to Grammer’s character on a shore leave early in his career.

We’re in a streaming day and you can easily find “Down Periscope” … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
