We’ve begun summer of 2025 in earnest and I’m continuing the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s visit the under-appreciated crime drama “The Seven-Ups” from 1973 starring Roy Scheider.
“The Seven-Ups” is significant because its stunt-driving team had worked on the iconic chase scenes in both the Oscar-winning “Bullitt” with Steve McQueen and the multiple Oscar-winning “The French Connection” with Gene Hackman. “The Seven-Ups’” main chase scene is the equal of the other two and makes the film an underrated cult favorite of crime drama enthusiasts.
“The Seven-Ups” is the story of a New York City police unit that specializes in getting the big criminals off the street – the prison sentences for the convicted are seven years and up … hence the name.
Scheider is the leader of the group and the movie focuses on both the cops and mob trying to catch a couple of extortionists who are kidnapping mob and mob-related folks and holding them for ransom.
“The Seven-Ups” suffers somewhat from the production values of the day, but where no computer-enhanced stunts is sometimes a liability, the key vehicle scene where Scheider chases the extortionists is filmed in real-time, real action.
You don’t get an A-list cast with “The Seven-Ups,” but the actors do a solid job and audiences should appreciate this effort. We’re in a streaming day and you can easily find “The Seven-Ups” … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
