A promotional “still” photograph from the movie “How I Got Into College.”We’ve begun the downturn of summer of 2025 and I’m continuing the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s go with “How I Got Into College” with a B-list cast that manages to make this one worth your time.
It is August 2025 and students are headed back to college or, for last semester’s high school students, off to college for the first time. “How I Got Into College” from 1989 show the back-then angst of a bunch of suburban students and focuses on the most popular girl in school and the stresses she and her friends experience.

Of course, “How I Got Into College” is stuffed with stereotypes, but you’ll also find some interesting characters from the oddball SAT tutors (Phil Hartman and Nora Dunn) to two answers on the SAT test (“A” and “B”), who squabble and compete like sitcom characters.
The point of the story is how colleges then (and even more so today) should focus on the student and not just numbers. With “How I Got Into College,” you get the nerd who ultimately succeeds; the football player who has a scholastic bent; the poor but smart young woman who doesn’t stand a chance of getting in; the back stories of the college admissions team; and the usual bulk of students who get too wrapped up in the whole process.
I found the most endearing scene is where you see the nerd’s application: he makes a video showing the pathetic lengths he went to show how acceptable he’d be at college … from learning juggling to learning how to do professional wrestling. Whew!
So, for “How I Got Into College,” we’re in a streaming day and you can easily find it … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
