We’ve begun the downturn of summer of 2025 and I’m continuing the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s tee it up with Kevin Costner and Rene Russo in the mostly a double-bogey golf film “Tin Cup.”
Sadly, “Tin Cup” never reaches the pinnacle of its sport of golf that director and co-writer Ron Sheldon did for baseball with “Bull Durham.” “Tin Cup” doesn’t just try too hard to become the soul of the sport of golf, it creates the fatal mistake of forcing the message to the point that it deserves mockery.
“Tin Cup” is the story of a driving range pro (Costner) who crosses paths with a psychiatrist (Russo), who it turns out is dating his long-time nemesis and now a rich winner on the pro golf tour (Don Johnson). Through the trio, you are supposed to learn the spirituality of the game, but you just get a bunch of vignettes (mostly silly and strained) leading up to Costner competing in the U.S. Open.
The supporting cast, headed by Johnson and Cheech Marin, is solid, but overall, Sheldon just makes a bogey with his effort to make the best-ever golf flick as he did the best-ever baseball flick (forget his attempt at basketball).
So, for “Tin Cup,” we’re in a streaming day and you can easily find it … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
