Flags remained flying at half-staff today (Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025) in the wake of the mass shooting at a Catholic school in Minnesota on Aug. 26. As usual, the staff of the Headquarters branch of the Collier County Public Library here in Naples, Fla., followed the presidential half-staff order and I got this shot at branch yesterday (Aug. 29). There is a protocol for the “official” flying of U.S. flags … and it begins with a presidential decree. President Donald Trump put the current one into effect and flags will remain at half-staff until Aug. 31. Remember, too, that traditionally, half-staff is for land-based flagpoles, while half-mast is aboard U.S.-chartered ships.
