Ticket to the Movies: Don’t miss out on endearing fun with ‘Son in Law’

Welcome back to my blog at the beginning of 2026. Here’s the first of my ongoing recommendations for movies to check out and this year I’m going for: “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, for the first of 2026, let’s take a look at the underrated and simply endearing comedy “Son in Law” starring Pauly Shore and Carla Gugino.

“Son in Law” is truly good and one shouldn’t miss or watch again. Yes, I wrote “truly good” and “shouldn’t miss” for a Pauly Shore flick … and, no, I haven’t lost my mind!

With “Son in Law,” you get the coming-of-age story of a small-town girl (Gugino as “Rebecca Warner”) who heads to the big city for college. Of course, she’s immediately overwhelmed by the school and the seemingly endless string of nutcases she finds in her dorm – especially from Shore, who stars as “Crawl” (he’s the sixth year senior who took two semesters of karate).

However, after she gains confidence (a new wardrobe and a tattoo – “It’s permanent,” Shore notes when she asks him which one she should get), the best of the story hits when she takes “Crawl” home for Thanksgiving as her “fiancé.” She’s concocted the story to avoid the obvious coming proposal by her high school sweetheart, who she doesn’t want to marry.

From there … well, you’ll see. Shore does the farmhand thing; he does the fishing thing; and he calls a square dance. However, it’s his bonding with her family that makes this film endearing and therefore special. Of course, everything is tied up neatly at the end of “Son in Law,” but not so saccharine as to make you want an air-sickness bag.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies” and watch “Son in Law.” You’ll definitely thank me later.
