Welcome back to my blog very early in 2026. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, so, let’s delve into the genre of Westerns with “The Long Riders,” which is a unique “family” movie focusing on one of the ever most-notorious gangs in history: The James-Younger gang, starring infamous outlaw Jesse James.

Well, filmmakers used several real families of actors in making “The Long Riders” by featuring the Keaches (Stacy and James); the Quaids (Randy and Dennis); and especially the Carradines (David, Keith and Robert). The pairings make for unique film. I’m not a great fan of Westerns (yes, I know that’s heresy in American cinema), but “The Long Riders” is one of the few that I’ve given a thumbs-up.

In “The Long Riders,” the gang is knocking off banks and stagecoaches and they’re pursued by a deadly group of rent-a-cops of the day, but the film is more about each individual’s personality and how it affects the gang and therefore their lives.

I especially enjoy the time on-camera for each of the Carradines as they outlaw themselves to a pyrrhic ending. Keith is suave; David is smooth, even in a knife fight or demeaning his hooker-girlfriend; and Robert is the chatty sparkplug of the group.

The whole mess winds up in bank robbery in Minnesota (another film was the focus of this “raid”) and then “The Long Riders” plays out its characters’ respective historic fates.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Long Riders.” You’ll definitely thank me later.
