Ticket to the Movies: On this ‘Day the Music Died’ anniversary, watch ‘The Buddy Holly Story’

A promotional still photograph from the movie “The Buddy Holly Story.”

Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, for today let’s remember rock ’n’ roll legend Buddy Holly, who died 67 years ago today in a plane crash on Feb. 3, 1959, by watching Gary Busey in the title role in “The Buddy Holly Story.”

Of course, “The Buddy Holly Story” is based on the life of the famed musician, who died all too young at 22. You need to remember that “The Buddy Holly Story” is not a piece-by-piece documentary (it even has “The Crickets” as a trio instead of a four-man group). So, beware of quoting Buddy Holly “facts” from the film.

In any case, “The Buddy Holly Story” is a showcase for Busey, who does sing in the film, and he was honored with an Oscar nomination for the performance. Along the way you run into a somewhat OK supporting cast of bandmates Don Stroud and Charles Martin Smith; Maria Richwine, who plays his wife; and Conrad Janis as the music company executive who signs Holley to his first contract in New York.

The scenes of  “The Buddy Holly Story” go from a hometown concert that stirs up religious trouble (hate that rock ’n’ roll!) to a mess in a country-western recording studio in Nashville and then finally on to New York and his appearance at the Apollo Theater.

Also along the way he meets the woman he’ll marry and there’s only a brief shot of an airplane taking off at the end and the crash itself isn’t present as part of the film.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Buddy Holly Story” on this 67th anniversary of “The Day the Music Died.” You’ll thank me later.
