Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, for today I’ll go on a sports theme with this week’s opening of the 2026 Winter Olympics. I haven’t reviewed a movie about winter sports, so I’ll turn to bicycle racing with “American Flyers” starring Kevin Costner.
“American Flyers” is a little-remembered film lost among more-remembered films from 1985. It is a family drama framed around brothers re-bonding through a bicycle race. Costner, who plays the older brother, has a medical issue and wants do the race with his younger brother (David Marshall Grant) and so the film plays out among the family medical issue as well as the brothers’ relationship.
Along the way in “American Flyers” you get a bunch of athletic stuff tossed in (Costner is part of a university’s medical group involved with human performance) and the supporting characters are Costner’s girlfriend (Rae Dawn Chong) and the beautiful hitchhiker who joins them (Alexandra Paul).
You also get competition and Costner’s old nemesis nicknamed “The Cannibal.”
All-in-all, “American Flyers” should have received many accolades and be remembered as much of a bicycle classic as the legendary coming-of-age tale “Breaking Away.”
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “American Flyers” and uncover a little-remembered gem you’ll remember for much longer. Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later.
