Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s deal out a movie today from the genre of gambling with “Rounders” co-starring Matt Damon and Edward Norton and as solid a supporting cast as you’ll find in any flick.

“Rounders” is a moniker for poker players, as the game is often played around a circular table. In “Rounders,” you get Damon as the “good guy” making his way through law school while pining for a bit of action at a card table. Norton is his friend who’s getting out of prison and about to wreck havoc on his and everyone’s life. After all, Norton’s character’s nickname is “Worm.”

The supporting cast includes excellent turns from John Malkovich, John Turturro, Famke Janssen and an especially nice one from the late Martin Landau, who plays one of Damon’s law professors and who has a high regard for the intelligence of the younger man.

“Rounders” takes you through the dens and with the denizens of New York’s “illegal” poker clubs, especially the one run by Malkovich as “Teddy KGB,” who’s rumored to have ties to the Russian mob.

Damon spends the film trying to recoup his major loss at the Texas hold ’em game from early in the film and then covering Norton’s pre-prison debt. Although not beyond a little cheating with Norton, Damon is the talented light in the poker rooms, while Norton’s personality basically infects anywhere he arrives.

“Rounders” offers an interesting look at poker (specifically Texas hold ’em), but not so much as to drag down the film. The film moves along nicely and segues neatly as Damon and Norton go down the rabbit hole of despair created by Norton’s congenital scumbaggery.

Of course, Damon ultimately plays his way out of trouble and begins to move on with his life.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and deal yourself a session with “Rounders.” Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later.
