Ticket to the Movies: ‘The Anderson Tapes’ from 1971 tells of a a coming age of surveillance

Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, today let’s dive back into crime drama with “The Anderson Tapes” starring Sean Connery and Dyan Cannon. It is somewhat of a caper film, but director Sidney Lumet relies more on the interpersonal relationships as well as the coming “Big Brother” technology.

“The Anderson Tapes” was released in 1971 and Connery’s opening scene is a little difficult to swallow (I won’t describe it any further), but the most interesting component of the film is that it is supposedly told through surveillance photos, video and audio: A peek at how technology captures everything in our lives … and this movie was from just about 55 years ago!

Connery is in his best form here and Cannon does a solid job, as does the supporting cast, which includes Christopher Walken, who was in only his third film. Others in the cast include Martin Balsam, Alan King and even SNL’s Garrett Morris in a small role as a machine-gun toting police officer.

The foundation of “The Anderson Tapes” is Connery’s plan to rob an entire apartment building in Manhattan during the Labor Day weekend. He’s just out of prison and he pulls together his crew and gets some backing from the mob, but the mob’s help comes with a price: He must take along a mob member and kill him during the crime.

The film plays out wonderfully under Lumet’s direction and the technology of the day will appear pretty much as dark-ages equipment, but the message is clear: You are never unwatched, no matter how secure you might believe yourself.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “The Anderson Tapes.” “The Anderson Tapes” can be found on a variety of streaming services. Find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later!
