Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, today I’m gonna recommend a neat little-remembered caper film: “Assault on a Queen” starring Frank Sinatra and co-starring Tony Franciosa and Virna Lisi.

Sinatra did “caper” films well, starting with the original “Ocean’s 11” in 1960. Following that now classic flick, he did “Assault on a Queen” in 1966 and it is the story of a group of modern-day pirates (well, modern to 1966) that rob an ocean liner with a submarine. Wow! Talk about a caper!

The “queen” name is because the ocean liner they rob is the RMS Queen Mary (sometimes incorrectly titled “HMS” Queen Mary) and the group cooks up the plan after finding an intact World War II German submarine while Sinatra was diving for treasure off the U.S. coast.

“Assault on a Queen” has a creative plot beyond just the idea of robbing an ocean liner with a submarine. It has details from raising the sub and cleaning it up; to a member of the gang needing to learn British slang as he will impersonate a British naval officer during the robbery; as well as being informative about treasure hunting underwater.

“Assault on a Queen” has basic and competent special effects of the day, but might be interesting to see a competent remake – although “competent” and “remake” are usually separate in the outcome of any Hollywood “reboot” production.

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Assault on a Queen.” “Assault on a Queen” can only be rented via streaming services and only rarely shows up on networks. Of course, it is on DVD as well (check your local library). Find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “Assault on a Queen.”
