Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, today I’m revisiting a film with a little personal back-story: “My Blue Heaven” and it has Steve Martin, Rick Moranis and Joan Cusack.
“My Blue Heaven” is personal because I watched it on HBO many time right after our son was born and we were up nights because of his colic. It appeared to be running endlessly on HBO and we just kept it running as we keep walking while holding him.
“My Blue Heaven” is the story of a mob guy (Martin) who gets relocated in the Witness Protection Program; his FBI agent shepherd (Moranis); and the local prosecutor who has to deal with his ongoing criminal actions in the town to which he was relocated (Cusack).
However, this isn’t some drama. Remember, it’s Steve Martin! His character “Vincent ‘Vinny’ Antonelli” and becomes “Tod Wilkenson” in the suburbs. He’s manic to a fault; he’s garrulous to a fault; but, he’s also entertaining to a fault. Even telling the story of how a fellow mobster got “whacked” with a a gunshot to the head comes off as entertaining, especially when he says how the mother of one of the guys like to put capers in a certain Italian dish.
Moranis is supposed to be leavening to Martin, but slowly comes around to liking the man. Not so easily impressed is Cusack, but he does ingratiate himself (somewhat) through her two children as Martin takes them all via limousine to a San Diego Padres baseball game.
“My Blue Heaven” becomes endearing because of Martin’s relentless restlessness and positive outlook on just about everything. You’ll also want to dance because of several dance sequences including the “merengue!”
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “My Blue Heaven.” It is available for free on one streaming service and you can find it for rental fee on others. Find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “My Blue Heaven.”
